Elkins, W.Va. -- The Davis & Elkins Senators men's basketball team lost in heartbreaking fashion on Wednesday night.
The Senators were out to an early 7-0 lead, but then Wheeling rallied and took the lead not long after. Wheeling dominated the rest of the first half, leading by 12 points at the break. D&E shot shot 32.1% from the field in the first half and trailed by as much as 17.
The Senators were determined to make halftime adjustments and Dan Mondragon had his squad firing on all cylinders in the second half. The team shot 55.3% from the field in the second half and scored 53 points.
Sam Rolle IV led all scorers for the night with 23.
Breland Walton had 17 points and 17 rebounds.
Unfortunately, the comeback was not enough for the Senators to put a tally mark in the win column. After tying the game, Wheeling's John Korte hit what ended up being the game winner with seconds to spare. D&E's Walton was able to get a shot off at the buzzer, but it did not fall.
The Senators look to use the momentum they had in the second half of Wednesday's contest when they take on West Liberty this Saturday.
