Contributions Aplenty in Season-Opening Triumph for D&E Men's Basketball

ELKINS, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins placed five in double figures outscored Frostburg State 20-4 in the final 4:47 to come away with a 108-100 win over the Bobcats on Thursday night.

The Senators, which hit the century mark in scoring for the first time since November 13, 2015, trailed 96-90 with 4:47 to go before scoring 13 of the game's next 14 points to move in front. The Bobcats stopped the run with a layup by Agyei Edwards to cut the deficit to 101-100 with just under a minute to play, but the Senators scored the game's final seven points, all of which came from the free throw line, to earn the win.

Marcus Fleming led D&E with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting to go with 10 rebounds. Breland Walton also had a double-double for the Senators with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Gyasi Powell had 19 more for Davis & Elkins in his collegiate debut, while classmate Sam Rolle IV fired in 15 points with 12 assists.

B. Walton, who had anticipated redshirting the season due to a prior injury, and Fleming keyed the new-look Senators effort after transferring in from junior colleges prior to the season. Powell and Rolle IV also stepped in seamlessly in their collegiate debut, both starting and logging over 30 minutes of game action each. Senior Myles Monroe added a steady 13 points, going 7-for-9 at the charity stripe in 36 minutes of action. In total, D&E finished the game shooting 53 percent and had a 44-35 edge on the glass.

Edwards led all scoring with 32 points for Frostburg State, including 7-of-10 shooting from behind the arc. Canaan Bartley chipped in 16 points and had five assists for the Bobcats. Juston Bailey came off the bench to score 11 points.

Due in large part to the inside presence of Fleming and B. Walton, the Senators racked up a 54-38 edge in the paint. Kyle Leslie notched nine points for D&E while Fable Burden III knocked down a pair of buckets from beyond the arc as D&E showcased its retooled lineup. The Senators built a 57-49 lead at the break, shooting a blistering 59% in the opening 20 minutes. Thursday's victory marked the second win in as many years in the Senators home opener for head coach Daniel Mondragon

Davis & Elkins returns to action on Sunday, January 10 at Fairmont State with tipoff set for 4:00 PM.
