Softball Drops a Doubleheader to Tusculum Sunday

GAME ONE: THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Tusculum 8, Davis & Elkins 3
  • Records: Davis & Elkins (7-4) | Tusculum (9-2)
  • Location: Red Edmonds Field – Greeneville, Tenn.

KEY SEQUENCE
Davis & Elkins battled back to tie the game at three in the fifth inning, but Tusculum roared back to regain the lead with five runs in its next trip to the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tusculum scored the first three runs on the afternoon, posting two in the second and one in the third.
  • Honesty Holt continued her hitting streak to get a runner on base for the Senators in the fourth with a one-out double. Moving to third on a passed ball, Holt scored on a single down the left field line by Ryn Boelter to cut the deficit to 3-1. Rhetta Persinger doubled a 1-1 pitch to left, scoring Boelter as D&E moved to within one.
  • Three straight Senators reached base with one out in the fifth, coming off singles from Amy Fincham and Kelsie Millner and a fielder's choice from Kristen Malloy. Holt notched her second hit of the day with a run-scoring single to tie the score at three.
  • Tusculum racked up five runs in the fifth to pull ahead for good.

GAME NOTES
  • The Senators had one more hit than Tusculum, but left six runners on base.
  • D&E had its six-game winning streak snapped on Sunday.
  • Tusculum had a double, triple and home run to power its offensive output in game one.

GAME TWO: THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Tusculum 2, Davis & Elkins 1
  • Records: Davis & Elkins (7-5) | Tusculum (10-2)
  • Location: Red Edmonds Field – Greeneville, Tenn.

KEY SEQUENCE
Tusculum earned a walk-off win in the nightcap with a single from Chloe Freischmidt in the bottom of the seventh for the 2-1 win against Davis & Elkins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jenna Evans was strong in the circle for D&E, pitching the entire game and surrendering just two runs. The Senators posted the first run of the contest after a Tusculum error as Malloy scored for a 1-0.
  • Tusculum tied the game in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring double.
  • D&E could muster just three more hits the rest of the afternoon, with two coming in the fourth inning.
  • Freischmidt ended the game with her walk-off swing.

GAME NOTES
  • Holt recorded a hit in each of the first 11 games of her collegiate career.
  • Fincham has recorded a hit in five straight games.
  • Evans was impressive in the circle throughout the weekend, combining to throw 11.1 innings and allowing just two runs with 11 strikeouts over the last three appearances.
