Slow Start Sets Tone in 91-57 Loss for D&E Against Charleston (W. Va.)

ELKINS, W. Va. - Charleston (W. Va.) surged out of the gate to build a double digit lead just over five minutes into the Mountain East Conference (MEC) matchup and did not look back in a 91-57 rout of Davis & Elkins on Saturday afternoon inside the McDonnell Center.

Myles Monroe shined off the bench with a team-high 16 points and six rebounds, while Donte Doleman had 12 points of his own in 33 minutes. Patrick Wilburn recorded seven points, but also contributed five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Lamont McManus helped lead Charleston to its seventh consecutive victory behind a game-high 17 points. Devon Robinson posted a double-double with 12 rebounds and 12 points and three other Golden Eagles were in double figures: Seth O'Neal (14), Eddie Colbert (12) and Riley Heatherington (11).

The Golden Eagles used an impressive inside-out attack on offense and racked up 58 points in the paint.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Doleman started the game with a jumper about 40 seconds in, but Charleston roared back with a 21-2 run to build a comfortable 19-4 lead with 13:26 left in the opening half. Tyler Twyman stopped the surge with a trey, but the Golden Eagles quickly moved its edge to 20 points before ultimately taking a 44-35 lead into intermission.
  • A jumper and layup from Doleman at 17:22 and 16:59 trimmed the deficit to 19 each time, but the Golden Eagles continued to dictate the pace throughout the second half with its hot shooting.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday was the Senators first home contest since December 12.
  • The Golden Eagles shot a blistering 62.9% from the floor in the second half.
  • After missing several games due to a lower body injury, Erkam Kiris returned to the D&E starting lineup on Saturday, finishing with four points and three rebounds.
  • Monroe collected his 11th game with 10 or more points since joining the Senators at the start of the season.
  • Doleman has scored in double figures in nine straight games.
