Tennis Heads to Shepherd for Midweek Matchup; Men Continue Play at 1-79 Championships

Men's tennis will play their first dual match of the season against regional foe Shepherd. First serve is set for 2:00 PM in Shepherdstown, W. Va. This will also be the first match of the season for the Rams, both coming off their debuts at the ITA Atlantic Regional. D&E and Shepherd have not met since April 6, 2014, a match that ended in a 5-4 decision in favor of the Rams. The Senators will also compete at this weekend's I-79 Championships with West Virginia Wesleyan and Fairmont State. Play will be in Fairmont on Friday and Buckhannon on Saturday in both singles and doubles action.
 
The Senators women's team will open its 2019-2020 dual match schedule with an away match against Shepherd on Wednesday at 2 PM. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since an 8-1 D&E victory on April 6, 2014. This will be the first competition of the year for the Rams, while the Senators competed in last week's ITA Atlantic Regional Championships.

Fresh off consecutive overtime contests, the D&E women's soccer team wraps up its three-game road swing on Thursday afternoon against West Virginia Wesleyan. Asheli Freed delivered the game-winning overtime strike last Sunday for a 1-0 victory at Glenville State as the Senators enter the conference contest 2-1-1 in their last four matchups. Sierra Curtis has earned the starting assignment in each of the last two games in goal, recording a shutout against the Pioneers on Sunday.
 
Despite the two campuses being around 30 minutes apart, Davis & Elkins and West Virginia Wesleyan will meet for the first time since the 2012 season. WVWC has won two straight games entering Thursday, including a 5-0 thrashing of Salem on September 29.

A late charge in the waning moments of the second half made things interesting as Davis & Elkins fell to Frostburg State by a 3-2 margin last time out. Thursday's matchup will be the first game action for the Senators since September 25 at Bobcat Stadium. Luca Compagnucci and Victor Pires found the back of the net in the last 12 minutes of regulation against Frostburg, while senior Everton Carvalho made a pair of saves.
 
D&E has won each of its last three games against West Virginia Wesleyan, dating back to the 2011 season. WVWC played to a 1-1 tie with West Liberty last time out on September 29.
 
Swimming Begins Starts 2019-20 Season at Notre Dame (Ohio)

Davis & Elkins starts the 2019-20 swimming season on Friday and head coach Nicole Rose has no shortage of talent on either team. D&E picked up a pair of wins over Salem (W. Va.) last season on Senior Day in the team's final dual meet before the 2018 GMAC-MEC Championships. Gavin Burnham and Chris Carter represent the senior class on the men's team, bolstering a lineup that added 10 freshmen. Meanwhile, five seniors are set to lead the Senator women's team, including Jaime Boulier, Emily Coleman, Mia Ellison, Victoria Fletcher and Artemisa Gutierrez.

After finishing its first homestand of the season with a 4-1 mark, the Davis & Elkins volleyball team will continue conference play on Friday against Concord and on Saturday against Glenville State. The Senators split their first two conference matches last week, ending its homestand with a 3-0 sweep of Charleston (W. Va.) with set wins of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-22. Kaitlyn LaCour, Mya Mintschenko and Raleighanne Weaver continue to lead the Senator attack, while Sarah Warren and Kylianne Philip lead the squad in assists. Kelly Smith leads the MEC and ranks 39th nationally in service aces/set (.51) after dropping in seven against the Golden Eagles on September 28.
 
Neither Concord or Glenville State have started conference play yet to this point in the season.

Davis & Elkins will play its second game this week, returning to the friendly confines of Nuttall Field to welcome Frostburg State. It will be the first meeting between the two squads since officially joining the league prior to the start of the 2019-20 academic year. Freed and Nariana Nealy has both recorded 20 or more shots this season and lead the Senators with a combined eight goals in six games. Defensively, the Senators posted their second shutout victory of the season on Sunday.
 
Frostburg welcomes Fairmont State to Bobcat Stadium on October 3 before traveling to Elkins. FSU boasts its own dynamic scoring duo, with Audra Curtin (7G, 3A, 17 Pts.) and Brooke Shehade (6G, 3A, 15 Pts.) leading the offensive charge.

The Senator men welcome Frostburg State to Nuttall Field on Saturday night to face the Bobcats for the second time in just over a week. Travel issues helped contribute to a choppy start for the Senators against Frostburg State in their meeting on October 5, a game the Bobcats won 3-2. Davis & Elkins has received goals from five different players this season and are placing 43% of its shots on target.
 
Frostburg will face a tough test in 20th-ranked Charleston before taking on the Senators.

After hosting its first home event in program history over Homecoming weekend, the Davis & Elkins triathlon team will be back at it with just over one month until the National Championships. Natalia Hidalgo Martinez posted the winning time at the Senator Splash-N-Dash, which proved to be a low-pressure race to help with training. D&E welcomed Eastern Mennonite for its home event, but now shifts its attention to the Tri at the Trump. The sprint triathlon and fundraiser benefits children and their families dealing with cancer and other diseases.
