Softball Earns Sweep Over Barton

WILSON, N.C. – The Davis & Elkins College Softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Barton College on the road Thursday, earning 9-1 and 3-0 victories for their fifth-straight win.

The Senators were trailing 1-0 heading into the fifth inning of game one, when the bats finally came alive for D&E after 17 days without a competitive game.

After a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, Kelsie Millner walked with the bases loaded to score Amy Fincham. Alyssa Cairns was then hit by a pitch to give the Senators a 2-1 lead.

Danielle Norton then stepped up and hit an RBI single to left, scoring Sydney Turner. Brittany Wade followed it up with another single to score Millner.

With the Senators leading 4-1, Alexis Smith broke the game open with a double to left center, clearing the bases.

After Fincham singled to put runners on the corners, Rhetta Persinger doubled to right center, scoring Smith and Fincham, capping off the scoring for the Senators.

Allie Lapallo came back into the game and pitched a scoreless fifth to trigger a run-rule victory for the Senators.

Lapallo tossed five innings, allowing just one hit and an unearned run. Lapallo did not allow a walk and had one strikeout for her third win of the season.

In game two, the Senators picked up three runs without batting any of them home. In the third inning, Cairns had a one out double and then advanced to third on a single by Norton.

Cairns then scored on a play in which Norton was caught stealing second, allowing Cairns to cross home plate.

In the fourth inning, Turner led off the inning with a double down the left field line and then took third and home with some aggressive base running on a pair of wild pitches.

The Senators would capitalize on another wild pitch in the fifth. Cairns led off the inning with a walk and then took second on a sac bunt by Norton. After Wade grounded out, moving Cairns to third, she scored on a wild pitch to close the scoring for the day.

Victoria Krystynak picked up the winning, pitching six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out one. Sara Tobin pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning for her first save of the season.

D&E will return to action on Friday with a single game against Edinboro at the West Virginia Wesleyan hosted invitational in Salem, Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
