Senators Win G-MAC Championship, Earn NCAA Championship Bid

Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Women's Tennis team defeated Cedarville University 5-1 Saturday morning at the Dayton Center Courts to win the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship.

With the victory, the Senators (14-11) have earned the G-MAC's first ever automatic bid to the NCAA Division II National Championships. The Senators will play in preliminary rounds, which will be hosted May 7-10, before the Championships are held May 18-21 in Denver, Colorado.

"I am very proud of our young ladies," said head coach Otis Cutshaw. "They have worked really hard all year to get back to this point and to win our second championship is a great feeling. We're excited to represent D&E and the GMAC at the NCAA Regional tournament for the first time ever and look forward to competing in it."

The Senators dropped the first point in the championship final to Cedarville (12-9) as Amanda Fewster and Haileigh Carper fell to Lauren Jackson and Kristen Heydt in No. 1 Double action, dropping the match 2-8.

Halima Michael and Kelsie Roby tied things up for D&E just moments later, defeating Deanna Whalen and Olivia Ancil 8-2.

Elise Simon and Marlene Ridgway wrapped up doubles action by giving the Senators a 2-1 lead heading into singles play with an 8-5 win over Cedarville's Rosie Thompson and Elise Perry. 

The Senators kept things rolling in singles actions, winning all three decisions to secure the championship.

Michael was the first victory for D&E, defeating Heydt 6-0, 6-2 to give the Senators a 3-1 lead.

A few minutes later, Fewster wrapped up her singles victory with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Whalen.

Simon secured the victory for Davis & Elkins, but needed three sets to do it. Simon dropped jet one to Jackson, but came back to win (4-6), 6-2, 6-2.

The Senators will now await the NCAA selection committee to learn where they will play in the preliminary rounds, which will be hosted at various.
