Baseball Sweeps Salem International in Doubleheader

NUTTER FORT, WV– The Senators Baseball team opened up its serious at Salem International on Saturday by sweeping the hosts 10-2 and 10-3 at Frank Loria Field.

Game One
The Basics:

  • Score: D&E 10 – Salem International 2
  • Records: Davis & Elkins (8-27, 2-11 G-MAC) – Salem International (6-31, 2-15 G-MAC)
  • Winning Pitcher: Zach Bradfield (4-5) Losing Pitcher: Tanner Helms (0-5)

How it Happened:

  • After a scoreless first inning, Davis & Elkins took the lead by plating two runs in the top of the second. Bragg Eastin had an RBI single up the middle to score William Kendrick and then Eastin came around to score later in the inning on a Robbie McKinney single up the middle.
  • McKinney then started the scoring for the Senators in the fourth inning with a double to left center that scored Ryan Butts. McKinney then crossed the plate on a Travis Phelps single to put D&E up 4-0.
  • The Senators scoring didn't stop in the fourth, as Tyler Mason then had a two-RBI double that scored Lance VanNoy and Phelps.
  • In the fifth inning, McKinney gave the Senators the first of three more runs with a sac fly that scored Eastin. Phelps then hit a two-RBI single to score Tyler Honeycutt and Butts, putting D&E up 9-0.
  • After SIU scored in the sixth, VanNoy capped the scoring for the Senators in the seventh with a RBI double to score Phelps for run 10 of the ball game.
  • Zach Bradfield tossed a complete game for the win, allowing two runs on five hits. Bradfield had two strikeouts in the contest.

Game Two
The Basics:

  • Score: D&E 10 – Salem International 3
  • Records: Davis & Elkins (9-27, 3-11 G-MAC) – Salem International (6-32, 2-16 G-MAC)
  • Winning Pitcher: Tyler Honeycutt (2-8) Losing Pitcher: Zack Skipper (3-6)

How it Happened:

  • Much like game one, the Senators jumped out to a lead in the second inning, this time scoring on an RBI single by Eastin that scored VanNoy.
  • D&E would add two more runs in the third, both coming off of the bat of VanNoy, who hit a bases loaded single into center field to score McKinney and Will Oliver.
  • The Senators added two more in the fourth to go up 5-0 off of hits from Oliver and McKinney. Oliver doubled to center, scoring Eastin, while McKinney singled through the right side, scoring Mason.
  • After Salem answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, Davis & Elkins extended its lead back to five with runs on an Eastin single and an Oliver sac fly, scoring VanNoy and Eastin, respectively.
  • Salem International would add one more run in the fifth before the Senators added three insurance runs in the seven. Michael Wood had an RBI double to left, scoring Butts. Wood then scored on a Phelps double and Phelps came home a few batters later on a VanNoy double.
  • Honeycutt earned the win, tossing five innings allowing three runs on five hits. Honeycutt had four strikeouts. Christian Scott pitched the final two innings of relief, allowing just one hit.

What's Next: 
The Senators remain in Nutter Fort, wrapping up the four-game series against Salem International on Sunday at Frank Loria Field.
