How It Happened:

 

  • The Davis & Elkins College women's basketball team came out on top 61-53 in a tough road game against G-MAC foe Kentucky Wesleyan College on Thursday, February 18.
  • In the first quarter, Davis & Elkins used short runs to build an early advantage. The Senators ended the first quarter on a 10-2 run and led 17-9. In the second, D&E continued to score with ease inside the paint, and had the game under control. KWC shot just 7-16 from the free throw line in the first half, and 7-25 as a team. KWC had trouble creating and knocking down open shots on offense. The Senators led 34-24 at halftime, and scored 22 points inside the paint.
  • Kentucky Wesleyan made a push early in the third, as they started the quarter on an 11-2, and cut D&E's lead to 36-35. The Senators would finish the quarter on a strong note, and led KWC by 10 at 50-40 heading into the fourth.
  • In the final quarter, the Panthers fell back down into the double-digit hole, as their offense continued to struggle. The Panthers would make one final push in the final minutes of the game, and cut the lead down to six with under a minute to go. However, D&E would hold on for the 61-53 win.
  • Stephanie Wooten led scoring for the Senators with 17 points, followed by Alicia Roth and Aliyah Dukes who posted 10 points each. Sydney Turner finished with 12 rebounds and 9 points on the night.
  • The Senators shot 91.7% (11-12) from the free throw line compared to only 53% (15-28) by the Panthers. The Senators also out-rebounded Kentucky Wesleyan 43-32 in the game.

"I am absolutely elated for our team. Huge road win in a tough environment and our kids displayed the mental toughness we have been looking for all season. We will enjoy this one for a few hours and then shift our focus to a solid Trevecca squad." – Coach Jason Asbell.

The Senators travel to play Trevecca Nazarene University at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 20.
