How It Happened:

  • A third quarter surge helped propel the Davis & Elkins College women's basketball team past Alderson Broaddus University on Saturday, February 13.
  • The Battlers controlled much of the early play through a strong defense effort to lead D&E by six points at the end of the first quarter. AB continued to stop D&E and led at the half by seven points.
  • The Senators could only manage 33.3% (12 for 36) from the floor and 20% (2 for 10) from beyond the arc in the first half.
  • However, two quick baskets by Kali Wilburn and Aliyah Dukes sparked a 17-8 scoring run that would see the Senators overturn the deficit to lead by 5 points at the end of the third quarter.
  • Caitlyn O'Neal and Sydney Turner combined to score 17 of D&E's 29 fourth quarter points, helping to push the Senators to an 84-67 win in The McDonnell Center.
  • A real team effort saw 5 D&E players finish in double digits for scoring on the day. Dukes led on offense posting a game-high 15 points, Stephanie Wooten followed with 14 points. Tajee Pledger chipped in with 12 points and 8 rebounds along with Turner who finished with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 7 steals.
  • The Senators offense improved in the second half shooting 64.5% (20-31) from the floor and 50% (5 for 10) from the field.
  • D&E scored 27 points off turnovers compared to only 15 points by Alderson Broaddus. The Senators had 53 points come from the bench as opposed to 24 from The Battlers.

Senator Synopsis:

"Just a total team effort and I am happy for our team. Our posts did some good things in the first half and then in the second half a smaller line up provided some defensive intensity for us. Anytime you can put five people in double figures you are doing a good job of sharing the ball." – Coach Jason Asbell.
