Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins baseball team concluded the 2015 season with a pair of setbacks against Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday. KWC rolled to a 13-5 win in game one and came away with a 9-3 victory in game two.
In game one, the Panthers scored two runs in the first, three in the second and three in the third to take an 8-0 lead. Travis Phelps singled home the Senators' first run in the bottom of the inning, making the score, 8-1. KWC tacked on three in the fifth and two in the seventh to extend their advantage to 13-1. Will Kendrick notched a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, Phelps added a two-run double and Kevin McDermott singled home one to set the 13-5 margin.
Austin Main (0-7) was tagged for eight runs on 11 hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Brandon Hammons gave up three runs on six hits in 2.1 innings on the mound. Tyler Mason tossed 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and walking one.
In game two, Phelps' fourth RBI of the afternoon gave the Senators a 1-0 lead after one inning. Kentucky Wesleyan went in front 2-1 in the fourth on a two-run homer. Phelps stepped to the plate in the fifth and launched a two-run blast, putting D&E back on top, 3-2. KWC singled home a run and later capitalized on a D&E error to pull ahead, 4-3 in the sixth. Kentucky Wesleyan pulled away with three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to take the 9-3 victory.
Tyler Honeycutt went eight innings, yielding seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits, striking out four and walking a pair. Bryant Hines tossed the ninth inning, giving up two runs on one hit, walked one and struck out one.
The Senators finished the 2015 campaign with a record of 7-35. Sunday's games were the final chapter in the careers of Hines and Jake Smith. Hines played all nine positions during his final collegiate contest.
