Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. – The D&E Baseball team split with the eighth-ranked team in the Midwest Region and G-MAC foe, Kentucky Wesleyan, on Saturday. The Panthers took game one, 11-1, but D&E bounced back for an 8-4 win in game two behind seniors Jake Smith and Bryant Hines.
In game one, KWC opened the scoring with a RBI double in the first. Tyler Honeycutt scored on a wild pitch to even the game at 1-1 after one inning of play. A solo home run in the fourth put the Panthers back on top, 2-1. Kentucky Wesleyan opened the flood gates in the sixth with a seven-run frame, taking a 9-1 lead. KWC tacked on two more runs via a two-run homer in the eighth to set the 11-1 margin.
Noah Jarboe (0-6) worked 5.1 innings, surrendering nine runs on 10 hits, walking a pair and striking out one. Heath Broughton yielded two runs on five hits in 2.1 innings on the mound. Jake Smith walked one and allowed a hit in one inning on the bump.
In game two, Kentucky Wesleyan started the scoring with a RBI single in the first. Travis Phelps tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Dodson, Heath Broughton and Zak Keesee each added RBI singles, putting D&E on top, 4-1. The Senators' offensive onslaught continued in the second inning with Phelps doubling home Will Kendrick, and later scoring on a bunt single by Tyler Mason to open up a 6-1 advantage. Hines singled home two more runs in the fourth, extending the lead to 8-1. KWC plated a pair in the fifth and one in the seventh before Smith shut the door on the 8-4 victory.
Smith (2-5) hurled the complete game, giving up four runs on nine hits, striking out four and walking one during his final start in the red and white.
Davis & Elkins wraps up the 2015 season with a doubleheader on Sunday against KWC. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
