Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins baseball team pounded out 24 hits to earn its first sweep of the season on Tuesday against Glenville State. The Senators took game one, 5-4 and claimed an 8-4 decision in the nightcap.
The D&E defense opened the game with a rare triple play in the top of the first inning. Will Kendrick broke a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI double. The Pioneers answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Tyler Mason tied the game at 2-2 with a single in the bottom of the frame, and would later score on a two-run single by Zak Keesee, putting D&E back in front, 4-2. Tyler Honeycutt added an insurance run with a single later in the inning. GSC plated two runs in the seventh, but Austin Main was able to get a strikeout to end the game and preserve the 5-4 victory.
Brandon Hammons (1-2) earned his first career win, working six innings, giving up four runs on five hits with one strikeout and seven walks. Main picked up his first save, striking out one in one inning on the mound.
In game two, Glenville State scored a run with a sacrifice fly in the second and added a RBI single in the third to take a 2-0 lead. D&E capitalized on three Pioneer errors in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at 2-2. Glenville State converted a successful squeeze play in the fourth to retake the lead, 3-2. Kendrick tied the game with a RBI single in the fifth. Dylan Appel, Honeycutt and Travis Phelps each recorded RBI singles in the sixth and Kendrick tripled home a pair as part of a five run outburst, putting the Senators on top, 8-3. GSC scored one in the seventh, but once again the D&E pitching staff was able to shut the door on the 8-4 win.
Isaac Riggleman (1-2) tossed six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking two to secure his first career victory. Main yielded one run on three hits and walked one in two-thirds of an inning. Senior Jake Smith notched his first career save with a one pitch, one out performance to seal the win.
D&E travels to Ohio Valley on Friday at 12 p.m.
