Senators Drop Two at Salem

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – Salem International downed Davis & Elkins in a Thursday evening doubleheader at Frank Loria Memorial Field. The Tigers walked off with a 5-4 win in an 11 inning game one and came up with an 8-5 victory in game two.

SIU's Nicco Lollio singled home a run in the bottom of the first to put the Tigers on top, 1-0. Heath Broughton tied the game with a RBI groundout in the top of the second. Steve Mihalyo drove home a run with a single later in the inning, putting D&E in front, 2-1. Salem's Jeff Apigo knotted the game at 2-2 with a single in the fifth. Tyler Mason plated a run in the sixth with a single, making the score 3-2. The Tigers' Manny Dominguez singled home a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to put SIU ahead, 4-3. Dylan Appel doubled home Mihalyo in the top of the ninth, sending the game into extras, deadlocked at 4-4. Salem International loaded the bases in the 11th and Lollio delivered a sacrifice fly to lift SIU to the 5-4 win.

Noah Jarboe worked 5.1 innings, yielding four runs on 11 hits, striking out one and walking a pair. Brandon Hammons (0-2) gave up one run on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings.

In game two, a D&E error and a Lollio single made the score 2-0. Salem's Cody Whitmer added a two-run double, as the Tigers took a 4-0 lead after one inning. Lollio's second sacrifice fly of the day pushed the lead to 5-0 after two innings. SIU's Joe Drago singled home a run in the third, giving Salem a 6-0 advantage. Zak Keesee cut the margin in half with a three-run blast in the fifth, making the score, 6-3. The Tigers added two runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-3 lead. Tyler Mason doubled home two in the sixth, pulling D&E within three at 8-5, but SIU held on for the victory.

Austin Main (0-5) surrendered eight runs on 13 hits, striking out two and walking one in four innings of work. Jake Williams hurled two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out one.

Davis & Elkins and Salem International wrap-up their four-game set with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3 p.m.
