Central State Knocks Off Davis & Elkins, 72-65

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Central State made 5-of-10 threes in the second half to upend Davis & Elkins, 72-65 on Thursday evening and advance to the G-MAC Semi-Finals.

Sharmaine Baker led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds. Stephanie Wooten added 16 points and six assists. Ashley Bowles finished with 15 points.

Baker's 22 points pushed her past Vickie Warehime and into the record books with the most prolific scoring season in Davis & Elkins women's basketball history. Baker finished the 2014-15 campaign with 525 points.

Jordyn Bond paced the Marauders with 19 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from behind the three-point line. Iniquia Snell added 18 points, while Jasmine Cooper posted a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds). Kourtni Perry tallied 12 points.

CSU was 7-of-18 (39 percent) from three-point range, compared to just 4-of-20 (20 percent) for D&E. Davis & Elkins held a 40-37 advantage on the glass. The Senators converted on 17-of-22 (77 percent) of their attempts at the charity stripe. Central State translated 18 D&E turnovers into 22 points.

CSU scored the first three points of the night before an 8-0 sprint by the Senators made the score 8-3. Caitlyn O'Neal and Bowles sparked the run with back-to-back threes. Central State retook the lead with an 8-0 run of their own at 11-8. Baker's second three of the night spurred a 10-2 jolt, putting D&E back on top 18-13. The Marauders held D&E without a field goal for over a five minute stretch and outscored the Senators 17-1, grabbing a 30-19 advantage. CSU went to the locker room in front, 35-25.

D&E shot 29 percent (8-of-28) in the opening 20 minutes and were outrebounded 23-13.

Davis & Elkins opened the second half with a 9-2 surge, trimming the deficit to 37-34. Bowles capped the run with a traditional three-point play. Back-to-back Bond threes extended the lead back to nine at 45-36. Central State added to their lead with a 12-5 jolt, making the score 57-45. The Senators battled back to within three at 64-61, but a Snell three, coupled with a pair of costly turnovers, allowed the Marauders to complete the 72-65 upset.

Thursday's loss brings to a conclusion the outstanding careers of Baker, Bowles and MaQuasia Ferebee. Davis & Elkins concluded the 2014-15 campaign with a 13-14 record.
