Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins and West Virginia Tech split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears claimed an 18-3 win in game one, while D&E bounced back for a 5-3 triumph in game two.
WVU-Tech scored four runs in the first, and one in both the second and fourth innings, to take a 6-0 lead. The Golden Bears broke the game open with an 11-run fifth frame, extending their advantage to 17-0. A wild pitch scored D&E's first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Dodson added a two-run single to make the score 17-3. West Virginia Tech tacked on one more in the seventh to set the 18-3 final.
Jake Smith (0-3) worked 3.1 innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks. Isaac Riggleman yielded eight runs (four earned) on three hits in one inning. Silas Gibson surrendered three runs on three hits and walked one. Heath Broughton gave up one run on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in 2.2 innings on the mound.
In game two, a pair of D&E miscues led to two runs for the Golden Bears in the second inning, putting WVU-Tech on top, 2-0. Broughton clubbed a two-run shot to left field in the fourth inning to knot the game at 2-2. West Virginia Teck strung together four hits in the fifth to plate one run and go ahead 3-2. Bryant Hines delivered a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the inning, giving the Senators a 4-3 lead. A Golden Bear error added an insurance run, making the score 5-3. D&E closed out the 5-3 victory with the tying run at the plate.
Tyler Honeycutt (1-3) hurled the complete game, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits.
Davis & Elkins hosts California (Pa.) on Tuesday at 12 p.m.
