Griffins Slug Past Senators

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Atlantic region powerhouse, Seton, Hill swept a doubleheader against Davis & Elkins on Tuesday. The Griffins posted a 6-3 win in game one, and outslugged the Senators in a 24-10 affair in game two.

Travis Phelps put D&E on the scoreboard with a RBI triple and scored on a Ryan Dodson single, giving D&E a 2-0 lead. Seton Hill tied the game a 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back triples led to four SHU runs crossing the plate in the fifth. William Kendrick blasted a solo shot in the sixth, but Seton Hill was able to close out the 6-3 victory.

Austin Main (0-1) worked 4.2 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Christian Scott walked one in 1.1 innings on the hill.

In game two, SHU's Nick Sell belted a three-run homer in the first to put the Griffins on top, 3-0. Seton Hill opened the flood gates in the second inning with five home runs as part of a 13-run frame to extend the advantage to 16-0. SHU added two more runs in the third, making the score 18-0. The D&E offense broke through in the fifth when Heath Broughton delivered a RBI single. Dylan Appel and Ryan Dodson also added RBI singles in the inning. A fielder's choice from Phelps and a double from Hines capped a five-run inning for the Senators. Seton Hill answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, making the score 21-5. D&E plated four runs in the sixth, including a solo blast from Phelps. The Griffins added three more runs in the sixth. Steven Mihalyo singled home the final run of the afternoon in the seventh.

Isaac Riggleman yielded six runs (five earned) on two hits with one walk and one strikeout in one inning on the bump. Brandon Hammons and Tyler Mason each surrendered five runs in one-third of an inning on the mound. Owen Arbogast worked two innings, giving up two unearned runs on four hits with one strikeout. Jake Williams allowed three runs on one hit with a pair of walks and a strikeout in one-third of an inning. Scott afforded one hit and struck out one in one inning of work. Broughton relinquished three runs on two hits, walked one and struck out one in one inning.

D&E opens conference play on Friday against Alderson Broaddus.
