Box Score ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins fell short in its upset bid against #20 California (Pa.) on Saturday, dropping a 72-67 decision.
Sharmaine Baker poured in 27 points and added six rebounds. Stephanie Wooten notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 assists, but was just 3-of-15 from the field. Ashley Bowles finished with 12 points and Maquasia Ferebee ripped down eight rebounds.
Lana Doran (17), Miki Glenn (14), Kaitlynn Fratz (13) and Emma Mahady (13) each scored in double figures for the Vulcans. Glenn also dished out nine assists.
Cal (Pa.) forced D&E into 24 turnovers and translated them into 28 points. Davis & Elkins held a slim 41-38 advantage on the glass. D&E outscored the Vulcans 14-6 in bench points.
The Senators scored the first five points, taking the largest lead of the opening 20 minutes at 5-0. The lead changed hands seven times and found Davis & Elkins with a 33-32 advantage at the break.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the second half with eight more lead changes--neither team was able to create more than a four-point cushion. Glenn broke a 51-51 tie with a three that put the Vulcans in front for good at 54-51. Glenn and Fratz combined to go 5-of-6 at the charity stripe in the final minute to avoid the upset, 72-67.
Davis & Elkins returns to conference play on Thursday against Trevecca at 5:30 p.m.
