Simpson, a rising impact rookie from Fort Washington, Md., has cracked the starting lineup under first-year head coach
Nick Patella and helped the Senators sustain a current four-game win streak.
At 5-10, 145 pounds, Simpson has emerged as the primary ball handler in a potent offense as D&E beat California (PA) on the road to even its record at 4-4.
Simpson helped bury the Vulcans with 19 points on near-perfect shooting (7-of-8 FG) and dished out eight assists -- both season-high totals for the floor general.
In 37 minutes, Simpson made both three-point field goal tries and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the line. He also collected two rebounds and had a steal.
D&E's three-headed monster in the backcourt this year has featured
Kevin Bracy-Davis (20.0 ppg), the G-MAC Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week for Dec. 7, along with
Wesley Sprinkle (16.5 ppg).
After starting the year 0-4, the Senators have reversed their fortunes with wins against Urbana, West Virginia Wesleyan, Chowan and most recently, California (Pa.). Simpson has scored in double figures in every game so far.
He is also one of two true freshmen currently entrenched in Patella's starting lineup (
Jordan McElveen).
In seven games played this season, Simpson is averaging almost 15 points per game to the tune of over 49 percent shooting. He is averaging 3.3 assists and 1.6 rebounds per game. His long-range shooting percentage is almost at 42 percent.
