Volleyball Seniors Murray and Drain End Home Career Leading D&E to Victory Against Alderson Broaddus

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: D&E def. AB 3-1, (23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23)
  • Records: D&E (4-4 G-MAC, 10-13), AB (6-2 G-MAC, 11-16)
  • Location: McDonnell Center, Elkins, WV
  • The Short Story:  Davis & Elkins dropped the first set, but recovered winning three-straight sets to record their first victory against the Battlers in the last eight meetings.  D&E has now won seven-straight matches the longest streak over the past five seasons and have matched their win total from 2014 with four regular-season matches remaining.  Elizabeth Estes recorded 17 kills and hit .349 for the match, Devan Saucy registered 16 kills on the night and hit .275 for the match and Sasha Johnson added 11 kills and hit .346.   Haylee Murray recorded 53 assists, three services aces and nine digs.  Ellie Drain posted 20 digs and no serve receive errors, Michaela Touchet had 13 digs and five service aces, while Kendall Jacobson posted 11 digs and two service aces.

How it Happened

  • After narrowly falling in the first set, the Senators jumped out to a commanding 15-9 lead in the second set and never looked back to post the 25-17 victory.  D&E hit .250 in the set led by Sasha Johnson with five kills and Devan Saucy added four, while Haylee Murray posted 13 assists and Ellie Drain had seven digs.
  • The third set was all Senators as they hit a match-high .308 and Saucy continued her strong swinging with another five kills, Charisse Mitchell and Elizabeth Estes each added four kills apiece.  After trading points tied at 9-9, D&E went on an 11-5 run to build a decisive 20-14 lead and cruised to the 25-20 win.
  • The final set was the most closely-contested of the evening with neither team holding more than a three-point advantage.  D&E led 19-18 and went on a 4-0 run to build a 23-18 advantage.  The Battlers held to their namesake and score the next four points to pull within one point at 23-22 on a pair of kills by Megan Christmann. Saucy put the Senators up 24-22, then a D&E service error made it 24-23, but a Christmann attack error sealed the win for the Senators.

Senator Perspective

"I could not think of a better way to close out our two seniors home careers than finally getting a victory against our rival AB," D&E head coach Kylie Carrington said. "Haylee and Ellie have been consistent leaders on and off the court throughout the year to our team and assisting me as head coach.  We have been on a special run and winning seven consecutive matches is a credit to how hard these two seniors and the rest of our team has been over the past three weeks, and especially with all the little things people don't see in the statistics that have contributed to our success."
