ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins earned a pair of close victories over Salem International on Friday. The Senators rallied for a 3-2 win in game one, and held on for a 5-4 victory in game two.
Salem scored single runs in both the third and sixth innings, taking a 2-0 lead into the seventh. Houston Darling opened the seventh with a double and scored on a William Kendrick single. Brad Banzhoff singled home Kendrick and scored the game-winning run on a base hit by Matt Moceri.
Zach Bradfield picked up a no-decision after tossing 5.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs on seven hits while striking out a season-high seven and walking three. Jake Smith (1-0) hurled 3.1 innings in relief, giving up just two hits and walking one.
In game two, Treavor Dubiel doubled home a run in the first and crossed the plate on a Travis Phelps single. Lance Vannoy plated a run with a single in the third. Dubiel and Phelps added back-to-back RBI doubles, extending the D&E advantage to 5-0 after three innings. SIU clawed back with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, but a seventh inning double play allowed Davis & Elkins to hang on for the 5-4 win.
Tyler Honeycutt pitched the complete game, yielding four runs (three earned) with three strikeouts and two walks.
The Senators and Tigers wrap up their weekend set with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
