Box Score 2 BECKLEY, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins opened the season with a pair of wins over former WVIAC foe Fairmont State. The Senators claimed a 9-6 decision in game one, and earned a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, Matt Moceri and Houston Darling each registered RBI singles in the first inning. Treavor Dubiel drove home a pair of runs with a single in the third, extending the lead to 4-0. Darling added a RBI single, while Ryan Butts and Brad Banzhoff each recorded sacrifice flies. An error added a sixth run in the inning, pushing the lead to 8-0. A fifth inning miscue by the Falcons made the score 9-0. FSU scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, making the score 9-2 after five. The Falcons' Randy Tallhamer blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth, but Christian Scott secured the win, inducing a game-ending double play.
Michael Paratore got the start, tossing 4.2 innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Daulton Weagley (1-0) earned the win, working 3.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Scott earned the save, tossing two-thirds of an inning.
In game two, Dubiel put the Senators ahead 1-0 with a sacrifice fly in the first. FSU knotted the game at 1-1 on an error in the bottom of the inning. William Kendrick drove one home with a single in the third and Lance Vannoy followed with a two-run double, making the score 4-1. A wild pitch in the fifth increased the score to 5-1. The Falcons scored single runs in both the fifth and sixth, cutting the lead to 5-3. Bryant Hines drove in the game's final run with a single in the seventh.
Making his first collegiate start, D&E freshman Tyler Honeycutt (1-0) hurled the complete game, giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and a pair of walks.
The Senators and Falcons complete their four game series on Monday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
