PRINCETON, W. Va. – West Virginia State's Desiree Giffin has been named the WVIAC Player of the Week while the Senators' Alanna Jones has been named the WVIAC Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office.
Giffin, a 5'3" senior catcher/infielder from Hagerstown, Md., helped the Yellow Jackets to a 2-0 week. She opened her week with a multi-hit performance in the first game of a doubleheader against Rio Grande. She posted two hits in three at bats, had one RBI and scored a run in addition to stealing a base. In the nightcap, Giffin went two-for-four with three RBI. One of her hits went for a double.
Jones, a 5'10" junior from Oakdale, Calif., was superb in the circle for Davis & Elkins. She threw 11 innings on the week without giving up an earned run. In a complete-game win over Winston-Salem State, she tossed four strikeouts. In four innings of relief against Shippensburg, Jones added six more strikeouts.
