Box Score ELKINS, W.Va.-- Chowan scored 23 second half points at the free throw line to down Davis & Elkins, 79-77 on Saturday.
Devin Miller led the way for the Senators with 24 points and a team-best six rebounds. Alex Visiljevic (15) and Wesley Sprinkle (10) also threw down double digits for D&E.
Kyree Bethel netted 24 points for Chowan, including making 5-of-8 from beyond the arc and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Three other Hawks notched double figures--Phoenix Butler-Pool drilled in 18, while Ashante Ross and Warren Powers sank 14 and 11, respectively.
CU made the best of their 34 opportunities at the free throw line, making 26 shots. D&E shot 49 percent (26-53) from the field for the game, compared to 41 percent for Chowan. The Hawks bench outscored the Davis & Elkins bench, 36-14.
The Senators built an early 16-9 advantage behind 11 points from Miller. CU answered with a 19-2 surge to go on top 28-18. D&E scored 13 of the final 16 points in the half to set a 31-31 deadlock at the break. Brian Dixon ignited the run with a three, followed by a traditional three-point play.
Davis & Elkins broke a 44-44 tie on a 12-3 blitz, taking their largest lead of the evening at 56-47. Visiljevic registered seven of the 12 points. The Senators led 65-57 with six minutes to play. Bethel sparked a furious 9-0 rally by the Hawks, taking a 66-65 lead. Miller put Davis & Elkins back in front with a three on the ensuing possession, before Butler-Poole buried a three putting CU ahead for good,69-68. Chowan closed the game out by making six-of-six free throw attempts to secure the 79-77 win.
The Senators host West Virginia State next Sunday at 4 p.m.
