ELKINS, W.Va.—WVSU held off the Senators, 89-85 Sunday night at the McDonnell Center.
Alex Visiljevic posted a double-double for the Senators with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Juwan Strothers added in another whopping 17 points in the second half alone.
Anton Hutchins netted 25 for the Yellow Jackets while Dominic Phillips added 19 points including making 13-of-17 from the free-throw line.
The Yellow Jackets turned 18 Davis and Elkins' turnovers into 20 points. D&E held a 43-26 advantage on the glass.
Kevin Bracy-Davis put the Senators up 10-6 early with a traditional three-point play. WVSU answered with an 8-2 jolt to grab a 14-12 lead. The Yellow Jackets lead by as many as six, before Brian Dixon buried back-to- back three's tying the game at 34-34. West Virginia State held a 40-38 lead at the half.
WVSU opened up a 71-59 lead with a 15-6 surge. The run was aided by four D&E turnovers. Strothers and Visiljevic managed the pull the Senators within four at 85-81, but West Virginia State closed the game out at the free-throw line to secure the 89-85 victory.
