Box Score ELKINS, W.Va. – Walsh rallied from a 14-point first half deficit to hand Davis & Elkins an 81-77 setback on Friday evening in the McDonnell Center.
Redshirt freshman Stephanie Wooten registered 16 points in her first collegiate game. Alicia Lentz pulled down 12 rebounds.
The Cavaliers were paced by Audrey Badovick—who scored 20 points, including making 8-of-8 attempts at the free throw line. Kelsey Funderburgh (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Whitney Dabbelt (13 points, 12 rebounds) each notched double-doubles for Walsh.
The Senators held a 58-52 advantage on the glass. The difference in the game came at the charity stripe where Walsh made 21-of-36 attempts, while Davis & Elkins managed to sink just 12-of-27.
D&E went on a 16-5 sprint early in the first half to take a 26-13 lead. The run was aided by seven Cavalier turnovers. The Senators took their largest lead of the night at the 3:43 mark when Ashley Bowles buried a three, making the score 38-24. Walsh closed the half on a 12-2 jolt to trim the deficit to 40-36 heading to the locker room.
Walsh pulled out to its largest lead of the night at 75-68 with just under two and a half minutes to play. Wooten nailed a three to pull D&E within four at 75-71, and, following a stop at the other end, Lentz hit a jumper to make it a one possession game. The Cavaliers turned the ball over on their ensuing trip down the floor, and Wooten hit a driving layup with 55 seconds left to tie the game at 75-75 and send the crowd into frenzy. Funderburgh let the air out of the gym with a three from the right wing on the ensuing possession putting Walsh on top for good at 78-75. The Cavaliers sealed the 81-77 victory at the free throw line.
Coach Asbell offered these thoughts: "This time of the season you do one of two things, you win or you learn, we will learn from our mistakes and I am confident we will be fine."
D7E will look to get back on track Saturday against Lake Erie at 3:30 p.m. The Storm downed Alderson Broaddus, 57-33 on Friday.
