ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT HONORS OUTSTANDING SENATORS ATHLETES AT ANNUAL BANQUET

Elkins, WV – The Davis & Elkins College Athletic Department held its 40th Annual Athletic Awards Banquet in The McDonnell Center on Friday, April 13th.  The banquet was a chance to celebrate the athletic accomplishments of the 14 intercollegiate Senator teams at D&E and recognize outstanding individual athletes.

  This year's 218 athletes were supported by a growing community of family, friends, coaches, faculty, fans and distinguished guests.  The banquet also included the Hall of Fame inductions of Mark J. Deutsch, '78, William G. Pilat, '61, and the late William S. Robbins, '56.

Presented by Dr.  Mary Ann DeLuca and Assistant Athletic Director Bruce Martin, Freshman Athlete of the Year awards went to soccer goalkeeper Ashley Winkelspecht of Williamstown, New Jersey and men's soccer player Dan Savory from Norfolk, England.  This award was sponsored by Papa John's Pizza and Seneca Designs. 

Presented by Mrs. Jennifer S.  Riggleman, Faculty Athletic Representative, The Joseph E. Carroll Leadership Award is given to a male and female athlete who exemplifies the qualities of courage, leadership and passion that embodied the D&E soccer career of 1969 graduate Joe Carroll.  This year, The Joseph E. Carroll Leadership Award was given to softball player Carissa Dunn of Modesto, CA and tennis player Agustin Ochoa of Medellin, Colombia.  

Sponsored by Mountain Valley Bank and presented by Dr.  Michael Mihalyo, based on the completion of a minimum of 90 semester hours and a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better, the Academic Athlete of the Year honors went to senior basketball guard Leah Fletcher of Mount Claire, WV and senior soccer player Timothy Bugge from Stafford, VA. 

Sponsored by Elkins resident and Senators Fan Rob Nestor and Wendy's Restaurant, the Athlete of the Year is awarded to a male and female athlete, from any academic class, based upon single-season or multi-season accomplishments.  This year, junior basketball guard, Page Turner of Poquoson, VA, and senior golfer Alasdair Forsythe from Dunlop, Scotland were honored.
