ELKINS, WV- The Davis & Elkins Senators took on WVIAC Southern Division foe Glenville State over the weekend and came away with a three game sweep of the series.
In game one on Saturday, junior pitcher Josh Kehr came within one out of throwing a no-hitter. With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Kehr gave up his only hit of the game. Despite losing the no-hitter, he held on for the shut-out and the 10-0 victory. Kehr's line for the game: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, and 6 K.
Junior 1B Treavor Dubiel drove in four runs while going 1-for-2 at the plate including a two run homerun to right field. Senior Brenton Kopecek continued his week of hot hitting going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Juniors Matt Barr and Josh Robinette also crossed the plate twice in the game.
Game two turned out to be a little closer as the home team Senators took the victory 4-0. Senior Zach McElroy picked up the win tossing four shutout innings while allowing six hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. It was another long ball that aided the bats as junior Kyle Crist connected for his first of the season on a line shot to left field. Kopecek once again led the hitters with two hits and a run scored.
In the finale, Glenville played tough but couldn't find enough to overcome our Senators in a 4-2 ballgame. The Boys in Red collected eight hits in the game by eight different players. Josh Robinette drove in two runs with a 3rd inning single that gave the Senators the lead for good. Junior Tripp Staley picked up the win tossing 8 1/3 solid innings. In his work, Staley gave up five hits, 2 runs, walked one and struck out a season high nine batters. Senior John Commins got the final two outs of the game to pick up his first save of the season.
The Senators will be back in action at Harpertown Field on Wednesday, March 21st at 1:00 pm when they take on the Rams of Shepherd University.
