WEST LIBERTY, WV - The Davis & Elkins women's basketball team won at West Liberty for the first time since 1996 on Saturday afternoon and in the process secured the sixth seed in the WVIAC Tournament. The Senators defeated the Hilltoppers 61-55 and will face West Virginia State at 6:30 p.m. on Monday in The McDonnell Center.
Junior point guard Page Turner led the Senators with 14 points, four assists, three steals, and three rebounds.
Sophomore forward Ashley Magallanez added 11 points and three rebounds.
Freshman guard Ashley Bowles grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for D&E.
It was a team effort for D&E as 10 different people scored.
Kayla Ayers and Bri Kamarec shared scoring honors for West Liberty with 14.
West Liberty led 51-47 at the 6:10 mark but the Senators held the Hilltoppers without a field goal the rest of the game.
Ashley Magallanez converted a lay up at the 5:40 mark to make the score 51-49, and then she made 1-of-2 free throws 30 seconds later to make the score 51-50.
Sophomore guard Rachel Gostomski buried a 3-pointer at the 4:35 mark to give the Senators a 53-51 lead, which they did not relinquish the rest of the contest.
D&E improves to 12-10 in the WVIAC, and 13-13 overall, while West Liberty falls to 14-14 overall and 11-11 in the WVIAC.
