CHARLESTON, WV -Fourth-seeded Fairmont State defeated No. 12 Davis & Elkins by a 3-0 score in the first quarterfinal match of the 2012 WVIAC Tournament.

The Falcons raced out to a 9-3 advantage off an ace by Tiff Smathers. The Senators countered with a kill by Heather Zapf, which started a three-point spurt by the designated visitors. FSU widened its lead to 19-10 when Erin Harwood sliced through the defense with an ace.
D&E fought back, pulling within seven on Brandi Brown's kill, making the score 22-15. However, the Falcons reeled off three points for the 25-15 win.
The Senators raced to a 4-1 lead in the second frame behind an ace by Nicole Miller, a block by Brown and Zapf and kills by Brown and Zapf.
The Falcons battled back, tying the set at five when Jessica Margo registered her second straight ace. With Margo serving, FSU posted five straight points, turning a 5-3 deficit into an 8-5 advantage. The Falcons extended their lead thanks in part to the front-line attacks. Giordon, Swann and Amber Wilson all posted kills during the remainder of the set, in which the No. 4 team won 25-12.
The Falcons controlled the third set, registering a 4-1 lead. The Senators were unable to pull within two the rest of the way. FSU finished the match on a kill by Autumn Ross.
For the contest the Falcons were guided by Swann's 10 kills. Ross added six while Leslie Giordon and Wilson each had five. Tabbie Bias dished out 15 assists while she and Erin Harwood each posted five aces. Swann and Smathers recorded match highs with nine digs apiece. Giordon was huge at the net, posting five block assists while Wilson had four.
For the Senators, Miller guided the team with eight kills. Brown added five while Zapf chipped in four. Haylee Murray distributed 17 of her team's 19 assists. Defensively, Meaghan Emery and Natalie Mathieu each posted seven digs while Callie Updike amassed four block assists. Zapf also had three block assists.
